Responsibility comes from within. No one can force it upon you. If you decide to act responsibly once, there’s no going back! You are your own responsibility! Your and your team’s goals are your responsibility! Responsibility is something no one teaches us because your responsibility is not other people’s responsibility!

Being responsible in professional life is as important as being responsible towards your relationships in personal life. Work- responsibility is a primary work-ethic. Work responsibility means to behave responsibly towards your organization and team. At a workplace, people share a common goal – success of the organization combined with personal development. Hence, achieving that target becomes the responsibility of the team-players.

Being responsible not only helps you with advancements in career but also helps you establish good relationships. It helps you develop your leadership skills, thus, making you a valuable employee. It motivates you to take actions towards your goals. Completing your tasks on time and behaving responsibly will enable your supervisors to place their trust in you and help you build your personality. Further, being a responsible person also helps you increase your accountability. It helps you accept your faults and work enthusiastically towards making corrections. This acceptance of faults further acts as a step towards developing a cooperative and adaptable personality.

Some ways to achieve responsibility at workplaces-

  1. Take the first step by making yourself fully aware of your job profile. You should be aware of your job responsibilities and the steps to achieve them. You should be aware of the proceedings of your organization and the way it works. In order to be responsible, you should be aware about the environment you are a part of.
  2. Be accountable for your actions. Responsibility does not always mean just completing your projects on time. Have the courage to accept your faults and take responsibility of the outcome, no matter whether it is a positive or a negative outcome.
  3. Improve your decision-making and leadership skills. These skills reflect your attitude towards a particular task. It shows your supervisor that you want to take an initiative and hence, you consider yourself responsible enough to guide others.
  4. Practice active listening. You should take an initiative to understand other point of views in the room.
  5. Develop a flexible personality. This would help you not only with your professional but personal life as well. You should be able to change yourself according to the situation and work accordingly in order to achieve your goals.
  6. Be punctual. Punctuality and responsibility go hand in hand. Arrive at work on time, submit your projects by or before deadlines and arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled meeting time.
  7. Don’t compromise with your work-ethics. Being responsible should be a part of your work-ethics. Make it a point to work according to your and your organization’s work-ethics and motivate others to do the same.
  8. Responsibility doesn’t mean exhaustion. Avoid exhausting yourself by taking charge of too many tasks. It would be better if you take charge of any one task and act responsibly towards it rather than multitasking.
